Is There No Balm?

Balm in Gilead
The area of Gilead in Trajordan was an important source for spice and balm. There is no balm in Gilead that can cure the disease of sin, no physician tree that can restorer the health of a nation quite overrun by such foreign army as that of the Chaldeans. The desolation made was irreparable, and the disease had presently come to such a height that there is no checking it. Or this verse may be understood as laying all the blame of the incureableness of their disease upon themselves, and so the question must be answered affirmatively:

Is there a balm in Gilead: is there no physician there? why then is not health of the daughters of my people recovered? (Jeremiah 8:22, KJV)

I personally love this scripture. The first time I heard it was at Refuge Church of Christ, Freeport NY. I was a babe in Christ–a new convert. That Sunday morning my dear friend and co-worker, Tanya Carter, with a vociferous voice, released this scripture into the atmosphere. Instantaneously, a stentorian praise went forth in the sanctuary. The church went up and praise filled the temple.

Is there a balm in Gilead? A woman said after her review of my new book cover, “this looks heavy.” I am not sure if her preference was to read it after examining the cover or to place it on a shelf. Moreover, she is correct! The cover is conspicuous–it sends a message with the intent to address reality and elicit hidden fears, anxiety, and bring about healing.

The physician and physic were both ready, but the patient was wilful and irregular, would not be tied to rules. The blood of Christ is balm in Gilead, His spirit is the physician there, both sufficient, all-sufficient, so that they might have been healed, but would not.

It is amazing how God sets us up and presents the opportunity for healing. Weather it is a book, the Word of God, a sermon, or a messenger, I believe God does operate in the most simplest form of communication.
The blessing is when we are open to His choice of presentation–His time and place.

It’s time for recovery — this is what I hear Him saying. The things you have lost shall be found in Him.

This scripture must resonate.
“Saying, If you will diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord your God and will do what is right in His sight, and will listen to and obey His commandments and keep all His statues, I will put non of these diseases upon you which I brought upon the Egyptians, for I am the Lord Who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26, AMP)

Its time for your healing–it’s time to recover all.
